My “Get Well Soon” Card to @SteveScalise:

Mr. Scalise,

Just a couple of things for you to reflect on during your recovery now that you’ve left the hospital. Now I would never gloat, take any joy or relish about anybody being shot & almost meetin’ Jesus, but since you’re gonna have a lot of time on your hands to recuperate, here are a few thoughts for you to ponder as you get to better health. Short. And. Sweet:

1) In 2002, you gave a speech to a White Nationalists organization headed by David Duke, former KKK Grand Dragon (see link). You know who White Nationalists are? They are people who engage in hatred of others based upon race, religion, sexual orientation, etc. Basically anything non-White, they abhor. Given that people of your ilk (i.e. politicians) rarely if ever speak anywhere without any honorarium being given (yes Steve, that means financial remuneration, as in a CHECK), I think it’s safe to presume you were paid for the speech you gave. You claimed you “didn’t know” they were racists, but eh, we all know better than that, right?

Matter of fact, you once touted yourself to be “David Duke without the baggage” (see link). Hey Steve, remember that?

And if I may be so bold, David Duke himself even admitted that you two haven’t met just once, but SEVERAL times (see link). Hey Steve, remember that?

In 2004, you voted against Louisiana recognizing Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday as a State holiday (see link). Even though, most of the REST of America had been celebrating it for nearly 2 decades at that point. Hey Steve, remember that?

You wrote several Constitutional provisions and amendments to “protect” marriage, and deny gay people and lesbians the right to even be legally recognized as a couple (see link). Hey Steve, remember that?

One of my personal favorites is a little over 20 years ago, when in 1996, you opposed a Congressional resolution that would have apologized for slavery, and I’m including multiple links on this one (see links). Hey Steve, remember that?

2) In 2010, you were the ONLY Congressman that your friends at the NRA gave an A+ rating to (see link 1) and (see link 2); every time a church, a movie theater full of people or a school was shot up, innocent people died and families were torn apart, they put people like YOU out on TV to toe the line and flack their company nonsense and say stuff like ‘hey, yeah we know, it was ONLY 20 children and 6 teachers gunned down in Newtown, CT – no big deal, we must still support the 2nd Amendment’. Look up the old adage about rabbit hunting. Because just a few weeks ago, it was YOU on the other end of that rifle barrel. You think about that.

Again, I don’t relish or take any joy in your misfortune, I happen to think the unnecessary loss of life is both serious and tragic, and there’s no coming back from that………….but you know what? From the day you got shot to the writing of this blog right now, July 26, 2017, your friends at the NRA haven’t come forward ONCE with a statement to even mention your name, denounce what happened to you, or call for change. NOT. ONCE. You think about that.

When you got shot on that baseball field, it was TWO BLACK officers: David Bailey and Crystal Griner, who ran into harm’s way to save you. ALL of your GOP colleagues were hiding for cover in the dugouts; NO ONE ran to help you, try to drag you or fireman’s carry-you to safety; they LEFT YOU laying on the ground, bleeding profusely. You think about that.

And oh, by the way, Crystal Griner is not only Black, but she’s also a lesbian. Talk about a double whammy! Or to paraphrase Sinatra: “ain’t that a kick in the head”. You think about that.

Two people that you have used your Congressional privilege to malign, denigrate and for all intents render socially irrelevant and without worth…………two people that you and your cohorts couldn’t give a continental damn about, solely on the basis of their skin color or sexual preference, ran INTO gunfire risking their lives to save yours. You think about that.

There are victims of mass shootings all over the country who weren’t lucky enough to get to go home like you did today. Victims of regulations and gun laws who did not survive what resulted from $5,000 a plate meet-and-greets that you and other like you attended & benefited from. And the ultimate irony of it all, the healthcare system that took care of you, Scalise – that literally saved your life – you and your party are hell bent to destroy and deny that same healthcare to millions of Americans who need it. You think about that.

So while you’re rehabbing, Steve, and your wife and kids and family are going through that long, arduous process with you, remember that you’re only guilty of having the wrong friends. When it mattered most, the very people you propped up, the very people who relied on you to do their bidding, the ones you extended your privilege and influence to in order to elevate them……….left you high and dry in their silence. Oh the irony………and the agony.

In your moments of quietude for however long your recovery takes, in light of all the aforementioned facts, remember something…………

This:

………..Almost led to this:
………………….You think about that.
