‘Tis the Season! Family, friends, good eatin’……………and potential high blood pressure. Let’s face it, NONE of us wants to deal with that. High blood pressure (also known as hypertension) is a silent killer of many, in that the symptoms don’t really manifest itself to where it’s noticeable. Some symptoms include: clammy, sweaty skin, shortness of breath, chest tightness, among others. They can lead to heart attacks, strokes, kidney disease, blindness, and in some cases, can be fatal.

Medical News Today lists fifteen natural ways to lower your blood pressure, including but not limited to:

  1. Walk and exercise regularly. Exercise is one of the best things you can do to lower high blood pressure. …
  2. Reduce your sodium intake. Salt intake is high around the world. …
  3. Drink less alcohol. …
  4. Eat more potassium-rich foods. …
  5. Cut back on caffeine. …
  6. Learn to manage stress. …
  7. Eat dark chocolate or cocoa. …
  8. Lose weight.

When your doctor takes your blood pressure, it’s expressed as a measurement with two numbers, with one number on top (systolic) and one on the bottom (diastolic), like a fraction. For example, 120/80 mm Hg. The top number refers to the amount of pressure in your arteries during the contraction of your heart muscle. The bottom number refers to your blood pressure when your heart muscle is between beats. This is called diastolic pressure. If the measurement reads 120 systolic and 80 diastolic, you would say “120 over 80” or write “120/80 mmHg.”
