Ok, so after last week’s post about the panic attack I had 2-3 weeks ago, I decided to post about an ebook I’ve been reading that has made me rethink some things about life, daily living and what it takes to seek happiness.
I’ve always believed that joy is derived from passion, whatever it is that you’re passionate about. Be it music, art, theater, architecture, philanthropy, business or what have you, even if it’s joy in helping others – joy stems at its root from within, not from without. We’re all here for one go around, and it is passion that sustains you. I’ll give you a quick example from my own life.
My late grandmother, Catherine J. Gill, was an educator in the Little Rock School District for over 43 years. She went from being a first-grade teacher, to a principal, to an Administrator at the School District Headquarters. She devoted over half of her life to her passion – seeing children being nurtured at early ages and, along with other teachers and educators, helping to steer them to their own passions in life at early ages. That was my grandmother’s passion, so much so that she never took a sick day the entire 43 years she worked there. Passion.
There’s an adage in the Bible (which oddly enough, I saw in the movie “The Shawshank Redemption”) that says: ‘salvation lies within’. I’ve never understood how, for example, people in relationships that break up are sad, but seemingly for the wrong reasons. They’re not sad because it’s over, they’re sad because they feel that their very lifeline to happiness and joy is tied to the OTHER person, notwithstanding the fact that a) you were somebody in the first place, and b) it was those traits that brought them into your life to begin with! NEVER let anyone define you. Only YOU can define ‘you’.
Or, if it’s a job and after so many years of putting up with a supervisor’s bullsh-t, one day you get laid off. So you’ve spent all these years stressing out over a difficult work environment, stressing to where your own health is at risk, then one day it’s over. You took all that abuse and then one day you’re let go and you realize, YOUR health suffered and what do you have to show for it? Meanwhile the person that CAUSED that stress…………gets to go on about their business like nothing happened. The simple lesson here is: never let ANYONE steal your joy or peace. And
I try to live my life one way: laid back, low key and drama free. I have no problem letting trifling folks out of my life because I realize if I don’t, it’ll ultimately be to the detriment of me, NOT them. So find your passion(s), focus on them, and you’ll find how easily stress begins to dissipate from your life.
